Creswell first caught the public's attention with this study of the once grand country homes of Britain, and he has since become one of the most successful contemporary watercolour painters with an international reputation. He devoted 5 years to the making of this volume, recording these abandoned and largely forgotten homes with their echos of a former splendour, and the evocative mood resulting from their neglect. Thus, some of these mansions have an air of beauty or mystery, whilst others convey a sense of abandonment or even desolation. Although Silent Britain did much to publicise the need to preserve and restore British heritage, Creswell's intention was neither to champion a cause or sentimentalise these buildings, but rather to capture their unique intangible "spirit". The artworks in this volume reveal Creswell's ability to convey tangible forms and material textures with sureness.
