It is 1940. France has fallen, and only a narrow strip of sea lies between Great Britain and invasion. The war could go either way and everyone must do their bit. Young copy writer Catrin Cole is drafted into the Ministry of Information to help write women in propaganda films - something that the men aren't very good at. In 1940, every draft of every film script had to be approved by the Ministry of Information. Cast and crew were waiting to be called up at any moment, travel was restricted and filming was interrupted by regular bombing raids. And so it is that we find a disparate group of characters whose paths would never have crossed in peacetime: Ambrose Hilliard, a washed up old ham from the golden era of silent movies; Catrin Cole, formerly an advertising copywriter drafted in to write women for the Ministry of Information; Edith Beadmore, a wardrobe assistant at Madame Tussauds; and Arthur Frith, peacetime catering manager turned wartime Special Military Advisor. This distinct group find themselves thrown together in the wilds of Norfolk to do their bit on the latest propaganda film a heart-warming tale of derring do, of two sisters who set out in a leaking old wooden boat to rescue the brave men trapped at Dunkirk. All completely fabricated, of course, but what does that matter when the nations morale is at stake? Newly crowned actor, script-writer, costumier and military attache must swallow their mutual distaste, ill-will and mistrust and unite for the common good, for King and country, and in one case for better or worse

Choices UK Product Information
BLACKOUT is the opening movement of a vast, absorbing two-volume novel that may well prove to be Connie Willis' masterpiece. Like her multi-award winning THE DOOMSDAY BOOK, this stunning new work marries the intricate mechanics of time travel to the gritty - and dangerous - realities of human history. The narrative opens in Oxford, England in 2060, where a trio of time traveling scholars prepares to depart for various corners of the Second World War. Their mission: to observe, from a safe vantage point, the day-to-day nature of life during this critical historical moment. As the action ranges from the evacuation of Dunkirk to the manor houses of rural England to the quotidian horrors of London during the Blitz, the objective nature of their roles gradually changes. Cut off from the safety net of the future and caught up in the chaotic events that make up history, they are forced to participate, in unexpected ways, in the defining events of the era. BLACKOUT is an ingeniously constructed time travel novel and a grand entertainment. More than that, it is a moving, exquisitely detailed portrait of a world under siege, a world dominated by chaos, uncertainty, and the threat of imminent extinction. It is the rare sort of book that transcends the limits of genre, offering pleasure, insight, and illumination on virtually every page.

The Full Cycle

The Full Cycle
Waterstones Product Information
You save: £1.46 Vin Denson was a racing cyclist for almost half a century, and his career ran the full cycle. He began as he ended - as a typical English clubman, riding the weekly club time trial and strapping on a saddlebag for the weekend hostel tour. In between were eight glorious years spent as a professional on the Continent when he rode with and against the very best riders of his era. During that period he worked selflessly in the engine room of the peloton; he was the original 'super domestique', and Jacques Anquetil and Rik Van Looy thought the world of him, even if they showed their gratitude in totally different ways. But he was also capable of winning on his own account. In addition to many other successes, Vin was the first Briton to win a stage of the Tour of Italy, and stages in the tough Dunkirk 4-Days race. His victory in the Tour of Luxemburg made him the first British winner of a national European tour. The Full Cycle is a long overdue account of the splendid career of a 'Gentle Giant' of the road whose passion for cycling has never died; it is also a story of loyalty, courage and friendship. To this day he remains one of the most popular and easily recognised of British ex-professional riders and is frequently in demand as guest of honour at club dinners up and down the country.

Fighting Ships 1850-1950
Waterstones Product Information
You save: £3.71 Fighting Ships 1850-1950 presents a stunning collection of 150 large-scale paintings, drawings, photographs and ship plans that tell the story of naval warfare from the first iron and steam warships to the deadly U-boats and aircraft carriers of the Second World War. Over these 100 years, the most significant naval engagements are dramatically depicted in striking detail - the bombardment of Sveaborg during the Crimean war, the battles of Tsushima and Jutland, the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Battle of Midway, the evacuation of Dunkirk and the D-Day landings, as well as the Japanese surrender - revealing the glory and exhilaration of the last great age of marine warfare. Arranged chronologically, the ships illustrated include HMS Warrior, the first iron-hulled, heavily armoured warship; the mighty HMS Dreadnought; the battleship Aurora which ignited the Russian revolution; the Graf Spee, under attack on the River Plate; the formidable German battle cruiser Bismarck; the British aircraft carriers HMS Argus and Illustrious, and the Japanese Akagi, amongst many others. This remarkable collection not only showcases some of the greatest naval artists of the period, including John Wilson Carmichael, Gustave Bourgain, Mc Clelland Barclay, Kobayashi Kiyochika, William Lionel Wyllie, and the official British war artist Richard Eurich, but also features powerful photographs, often taken by the sailors themselves. Each image is accompanied by Sam Willis's expert commentary, shedding light on the key naval conflicts of the era, the breathtaking complexity of the modern warship - as well as life and death on board ship for the ordinary sailor.

Punch Goes To War
Waterstones Product Information
You save: £6.20 Historian Asa Briggs commented that "Punch" through the Second World War recaptures the mood of the period perhaps more evocatively than any other source. And "Punch"'s renowned cartoons, above all, reveal the flavour of the era to present-day readers - bringing to life the restrictions, foibles and fears of wartime Britain. Gas masks, blackouts, evacuation, identity cards, air raids, rationing, Digging For Victory, Land Girls and Wrens, "Punch" depicted the British as they Kept Calm and Carried On. "Punch Goes to War" is an entertaining and nostalgic look at the British during one of the most stirring eras of our recent past and is a uniquely accessible historical document. 2010 represents the 70th anniversary of Dunkirk, the Battle of Britain and the beginning of the "Blitz", all of which feature prominently in the book.
