Red cloth boards, red leather spine, rubbed, bumped but sound. Front pastedown has elaborately engraved Ex Libris of Francis Edwards of Northwood (the bookseller), and the words: Francis Edwards (Archives) pencilled in above. There are a dozen or so loose inserts, relevant to Hertfordshire monuments, consisting of press cuttings, an OS map of Watford in 1822, reprinted 1952, two engravings, one of Brocket Hall, Hartfordshire sic, 1705, etc. All the volume's fold-out maps and full-page ilustrations are present and in good condition, as is the text, though suffering a little from the foxing usual in books of this age. An interesting copy of this first of the Royal Commission's county volumes.

Showing the References to the Hundreds Normancross, Leightonstone, Hurstingston, & Toseland. And also showing the following details : Market Towns with distances from London given in measured miles; churches and chapels; turnpike roads (with figures on the turnpike roads expressing the distance in measured miles between one market town and another); cross roads; parks and gentlemens houses; navigable canals; rivers. Also showing the latitude and longitude west and the Meridian of Greenwich. And giving indications of higher and lower ground, and wooded areas. Map Condition : Very Good : slight greying and yellowing areas to the map; otherwise colours very well preserved, and tones and text excellent; occasional minor curl and minor lifting at edges of divides, otherwise very well preserved; slight toning to areas at the back of the canvas; very minor wear to the corners of the blue ribbon surround.
