BOOK DESCRIPTION : 2000, 1st Edition paperback; 265 pages with b/w illustrations, transcriptions of original documents in Italian with English translations, bibliography etc; in New Condition. In 1943 Italy split into northern and southern opposing factions. The Badoglio government, supporting the Allies, was established in the south; and a new rival fascist government, the Italian Social Republic (RSI) was created under the auspices of the German Nazis in the north and led by the recently deposed national leader Mussolini. This important period of Italian civic war from 1943 until 1945 has often been dismissed as insignificant or chronicled with much partiality. Mussolini's Last Republic sets out to offer a fresh study of this short era, revealing as it did much of the Italian national political spirit of rhetorical idealism on the one hand, and pragmatic compromise on the other. The study makes an especial focus on the northern RSI, and in particular, on its arm of propaganda, the Ministry for Popular Culture (MINCUP), which reflected and echoed the will and strategy of Mussolini's RSI. MINCUP's aims, legislation, its conflicts with the German authorities, and its eventual disintegration are described and examined. The study makes use of new material, and of a series of pamphlets issued to members of MINCUP for internal distribution. The documents help provide a valuable insight into the policies of the RSI and its objectives and attitudes in the crucial months between March 1944 and April 1945. The study also includes a survey of the people involved in the RSI, and of the principal historic events between Mussolini's fall from power and his capture by the partisans in April 1945. Rooted in the heyday of the British Empire, "Swallows and Amazons" and its sequels described a nostalgic Utopia. Yet before that, Arthur Ransome, famous for different reasons. Between 1917 and 1924, as Russian correspondent for the "Daily News" and "Manchester Guardian", he was an uncritical apologist for the Bolshevik regime, with unique access to the revolutionary leaders. As the Red Army engaged with an Allied invasion of Russia, Ransome was conducting a love affair with Evgenia Shelepina, private secretary to Leon Trotsky, then Soviet Commissar for War. As the intimate friend of Karl Radek, the Bolshevik Chief of Propaganda, he denied the Red Terror and compared Lenin to Oliver Cromwell. No English journalist was considered more controversial, or more damaging to British security. At Whitehall, he was accused of being the paid agent of a hostile power and only narrowly escaped prosecution for treason.This is a fascinating, often chilling revision of an English icon through the most formative decade of the twentieth century.
