David and Hélène Barrault took over this vineyard perched on slopes overlooking the River Gironde two weeks before the ‘challenging’ 1997 vintage not too far from Sainte-Croix–du-Mont. Since the 2003 vintage in particular they have been making terrific wines. As the Gault Millau guide says of Ch. Forward thinking has taken form in a second tier of reds, blended with Helderberg fruit and bottled under the label KC. 'This allows us to elevate the quality and status of our premium red wines, reserving the very best parcels of vineyard for the Marlbrook and Klein Constantia Cabernet Sauvignon ranges,' explains Adam (Klein Constantia's winemaker (since the 2004 vintage) is 29-year-old Adam Mason). Healthy, deep garnet colour. On the nose is initial spicy - wood scents give way to ripe plummy, Christmas pud' aromas, and hints of cool grown Cabernet. The palate is well structured, but medium bodied. Mouth watering flavours of ripe, juicy red currants and fleshy plums. Wonderful array of classic, cooler Cabernet attributes complimented by velvety Merlot flavours. Judicious oaking has lent an added dimension of savoury flavours to this balanced, moreish morsel. With the correct storage, this wine will continue to mature and evolve for a further 8-10 years.

Displays all the hallmarks of fine wine making in a New World cool climate. The nose is of ripe plums with some balancing hints of leaves and mint, the palate is medium to full bodied with an elegant, well structured texture anchoring its plummy, damson and slightly spicy character. This wine is polished and stylish with an open generosity that makes it very accessible. Pan fried lamb cutlets with spinach and stilton mash, roasted mediterranean vegetables with Planeta's olive oil, roasted leg of lamb with rosemary and garlic or simply a selection of cheese. Situated just 3km from the sea there is a cooling breeze which inflences the vineyard, helping to produce a cooler, longer ripening period. Diurnal temperatures are varied which helps with the aromatic quality of the wine. Grapes are hand harvested and crushed into steel to complete fermentation to dryness. Ageing is for 12 months in 25% new barrels which are mostly French. Gunnar, son of the Viking Chief, Olaf the Black, 1237 AD was the alleged founder of the Gunn Clan in Scotland. The courage, boldness and tenacity of the Vikings inspired the naming of this fine, complex and alluring red wine. A blend of the famous Bordeaux varieties Cabernet Sauvignon which is planted on well drained gravely soils, good for close knit tannins, Merlot planted on alluvial clay based soils, giving the wine its richness and Petit Verdot grown in quartz based soils contributing to the deep colour. The wine is matured in French barriques for up to 24 months and then bottle aged in our cellars for a further 12 months before release. Produced in limited quantities with the cool climate resulting in a wine that is more Bordeaux in style, with alcohols in the region of 13%, supported by beautifully balanced acids and red fruits (cherry, strawberry.
