What is Garlic? Garlic is a member of the onion (Allium) family, and is used (in fresh or dried form) as a source of characteristic sulphur containing chemical compounds (e.g. allicin, which is responsible for the odour of garlic), that have various actions within the body. Some of these compounds are present in garlic in a latent form, which are activated when garlic cloves are crushed or digested. Bio-Garlic is a formulation containing garlic powder dried in a special way to preserve the activity of these latent chemical compounds (particularly alliin and allinase) prior to their activation within the body. What does Garlic do? When garlic is crushed or digested within the intestinal tract, the sulphur containing amino acid derivative alliin is converted by the enzyme allinase (also present in garlic) into allicin, which is the most important of the active substances present in garlic. The activity of the enzyme allinase is reduced by heat, hence the physiological effects of cooked garlic are reduced. The active compounds in garlic help maintain healthy blood lipid profiles; total cholesterol levels are reduced by approximately 10% (by mediating cholesterol synthesis in the liver), with a 15% increase in HDL cholesterol and 15% reduction in LDL cholesterol. Garlic derived compounds also help maintain healthy cardiovascular function, in particular blood pressure, platelet adhesiveness, and clotting. Garlic derived compounds have anti-microbial activity which helps maintain healthy immune function. Garlic extract has powerful broad-spectrum antibacterial and antifungal activity, including effective action against Candida species and Helicobacter pylori. Garlic extract inhibits the growth of Candida albicans directly via inhibition of cellular protein, nucleic acid and lipid synthesis, disruption of cell wall integrity, and stimulation of cell death by increased oxidative stress. Garlic also stimulates the activity of immune system cells such as leukocytes and macrophages against Candida albicans. How much garlic should you take? The generally recommended intake for garlic is 400-600mg dried garlic powder/day (equivalent to a daily dose of 4000mg of fresh garlic). This equates to a daily intake of 4000 microgm/day of allicin potential. Are there adverse effects from taking garlic? Garlic is generally well tolerated, with mild gastrointestinal disturbance or skin rash being occasionally reported. Clinical and animal studies have shown the toxicity of garlic to be very low. What is beta-Carotene? Beta-carotene is a member of the carotenoid family of plant pigments, which are responsible for the yellow, orange and red colours of certain fruits and vegetables. Beta-carotene is also known as pro-vitamin A, as it is converted by the body into vitamin A. Beta-carotene is generally well tolerated with a very low risk of toxicity. In contrast with vitamin A (excess intake of which may cause liver damage or birth defects), it is virtually impossible to overdose with beta-carotene, as the body eliminates any of the latter substance which is surplus to requirements. No adverse effects have been reported in pregnant or lactating women taking up to 50,000IU/day, and intakes up to 1000mg/Kg body weight given to rats showed no long term toxic effects. Very high intake of beta-carotene (more than 100,000IU/day) may cause areas of the skin to take on an orange tone, which is harmless. Patients with diabetes, renal or liver disease, or with hyperthyroidism should take beta-carotene with caution. What is Calcium? Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the human body, which contains approximately 1.2 Kg, 99% of which is stored in bones and teeth, with the remaining 1% present in the blood and other bodily tissues. The skeleton acts as a reservoir for calcium; if the intake of calcium is insufficient, bones become depleted in calcium. Dietary sources of calcium include dairy products, fish and some green vegetables. Oxalic acid, which is found in some green vegetables like spinach, is a potent inhibitor of calcium absorption.
