This book reveals that in spite of his protestations Joyce was profoundly influenced by one of the major figures of nineteenth-century culture, the composer Richard Wagner. In correspondence and conversation, James Joyce kept himself aloof from his age, and denigrated recent art and thought at almost every opportunity. 'In the last two hundred years,' he declared, 'we haven't had a great thinker.' This book reveals that in spite of his protestations Joyce was profoundly influenced by one of the major figures of nineteenth-century culture, the composer Richard Wagner. Timothy Martin documents Joyce's exposure to Wagner's operas, and defines a pervasive Wagnerian presence in his work, identifying scores of allusions. Wagner emerges as an important source in the development of literary modernism, and - alongside Flaubert and Ibsen - as one of Joyce's most important influences from the previous century. The revisionary impact of this empirical study in cultural history was to present Joyce as far more a child of the nineteenth century than he wished to acknowledge, much more than Joyce's students historically recognised.

In high school, Ted managed to get himself a date with Mary after he rescued her mentally handicapped brother, Warren, from a bully, but it ended in disaster when he contrived to do himself an injury while doing up his fly and had to be rushed to hospital. Thirteen years on, Ted is still unable to get over Mary and hires private detective Pat Healy (Matt Dillon) to find her. Healy tracks Mary and Warren to Miami, but falls in love with her himself and decides to tell Ted that she is now an overweight mother of four. Undeterred, Ted makes his own way to Miami, but finds that he has more competition than just Ted for Mary's affections.

County Clare Ireland 1970.John Joe Mac Mahon (Bernard Hill) may be an aging bachelor and solitary farmer but he plays a rousing fiddle with his own little band. John Joe is quite the local hero in County Clare because his band won the All Irish Band Competition for the last two years. Naturally John Joe is determined to win the trophy again this year but rumor has it that for the first time a hot Irish band out of Liverpool will be crossing the Sea to give them a run for their money. Well John Joe has a pretty good idea that the band might be none other than that of his long lost brother Jimmy (Colm Meany) whom he has not heard a bloody word from for twenty odd years.Over in Liverpool the now prosperous Jimmy has heard just how good John Joe's band is and he's not leaving anything to chance. Paying some hooligans to steal the wheels from John Joe's van Jimmy hopes to prevent his older brother from registering in time to enter the competition. But Jimmy and John Joe are cut from the same cloth and John Joe has himself arranged for the customs inspector to delay Jimmy as he drives off the ferry. In spite of all their shenanigans both brothers manage by hook or by crook to register in the nick of time and after all these years they finally meet again face to face. And well to put it mildly it's not a pretty sight. Meanwhile Anne (Andrea Corr) the beautiful young fiddle player in John Joe's band meets and falls in love with the handsome young flute player Teddy (Shaun Evans) from Jimmy's Liverpool band. And Anne's mother Maisie (Charlotte Bradley) who plays piano in John Joe's band becomes highly distraught upon learning that Jimmy is back in Ireland. Then when she overhears Jimmy talking about her in a pub a furious Maisie hauls off and slaps him hard across the face. And when Maisie an overly protective mother learns that Anne is in love with Teddy Maisie reluctantly reveals to her daughter her deepest darkest secret - the mystery of her father's identity. Anne's father is Jimmy John Joe's rotten brother who promised Maisie the world and then abandoned her when she became pregnant with Anne. And now we realize why John Joe is so angry with him for he was once in love with Maisie himself. Family ties trump family feuds but when the time comes to play who is going home with the trophy? And who is going home with Anne?

The prospects for Britain and her new war leader were inconceivably black. French intelligence estimated that Britain could withstand a German onslaught for no more than 3 weeks. Hitler's forces had enjoyed unbroken and astonishing success leading the highest levels of power in Britain to believe that Hitler could not be beaten. Churchill alone never faltered announcing to the British people that his aim was Victory - victory at all costs victory in spite of all terror; victory however long and hard the road may be. Given the circumstances it was an astonishing goal to set before the exhausted nation. What followed is now history from the defeat of the mighty Luftwaffe in the Battle of Britain to Battle of the Atlantic against the U-Boats to the annihilation of the Wehrmacht on the Eastern Front. It is easy now to criticise Churchill. Good commanders like Wavel were treated unfairly by him; the ill-fated convoy PQ17 set sail to disaster at the Prime Minister's insistence. These decisions were at the time far from simple and whatever Churchill's failings they are far outweighed by the splendour of his achievements. From the very outset he recognised the Nazi regime for what is was and fought it unswervingly. His masterful oratory not only inspired a nation but kept priceless hope alive in the hearts of millions enslaved on the Continent. In President Kennedy's words Churchill took the English language to war.
