Special Forces - Elite Military Units In Combat
    The Hut Product Information
Disc One - Special Forces:It is an old military tradition that the uniform is to be worn with pride yet some of the most highly regarded service badges are rarely if ever seen in public. Their wearers if they wear this uniform at all are unlikely to be found in any grand victory parade even when they have played a crucial role in securing victory. Such men belong to what are usually called 'Special Forces' shadowy highly select units whose very existence is scarcely acknowledged by their own governments. The right to wear the insignia of formations such as the Green Berets is not easily won...Using rare and fascinating footage we bring you the story of these men.Disc Two - Snipers:The story of the sniping war as it developed during World War II throughout the various theatres of war. At the outset of war sniping was not considered relevant to modern warfare but its importance was gradually realised by all the major combatants. This programme covers the development of different weapons and techniques adopted by the German Russian British US and Japanese armies. Furthermore it covers the psychology of the sniper and his association with regular soldiers. The sniper was and remains until this day a contradictory figure respected as a skilled professional hated as an assassin.Disc Three - Elite Forces:The paratroops have long been firmly established as the best-known of all elite forces. The idea of parachute troops was originally put forward in 1918 but it was not really until the Second World War that the modern paratrooper emerged. The first units were almost entirely the creation of General Kurt Student Commander of the German Airborne Forces whose men carried out some of the most spectacular exploits of the war. They played a key role in the lightning conquest of Normandy. The supposedly impregnable Belgium fortress of Eban-Emael designed to stop an army was eliminated by a handful of determined attackers in gliders. The capture of Crete in 1941 by a purely airborne assault remains the great classic of its kind. The brilliant early successes of the German paratroops rapidly led to the creation of similar elite forces by both the British and the Americans. Three Allied airborne divisions took part in the Normandy landings of June 1944 and although many of the drops went widely astray the paratroops went on to achieve nearly all their objectives. But it is not merely on the dazzling airborne actions that the paratroops' claim to fame is founded. Deployed as elite infantry their record is no less impressive especially in defence - as was demonstrated so notably by the Germans at Cassino the British at Arnhem and the Americans at Bastogne. The paratroops provided some of the war's greatest heroes.

The differing weapon systems and crew training of the British and German fleets are examined in detail, as is the titanic struggle of Jutland, through an hour-by-hour, shot-by-shot, reconstruction. The War File - War At Sea: Naval Battles And Vessels Of Ww2
    The Hut Product Information
Disc 1 - Great Sea Battles Of World War Two The mid 1930's saw Germany rebuilding her fleets defying the Versailles Treaty as Hitler planned to encircle Britain with his Kriegsmarine. Within hours of war's declaration a U-boat had claimed its first victim in an underwater reign of terror that struck merchantman and warship alike. By April 1940 Germany had sunk one million tons of Allied shipping. The entrance of Mussolini's Italy shifted the balance of power in the Mediterranean. However the course of NAval warfare was changed in 1941 when torpedo bombers from HMS Illustrious decimated the Italian fleet at anchor in Taranto. The surprise attack on Pearl Harbour on 7th December 1941 dwarfed Taranto with 19 warships and 190 aircraft lost and 22 500 dead. Sea power proved crucial in the Pacific. The Battle of the Coral Sea was decisive in denying Japan a gateway to Australia and was a naval first - opposing forces launching air attacks 120 miles apart were never in sight of each other. After the US strike on Midway there was no doubting the tide had turned. The era of the battleship had long gone: the aircraft carrier was now the undisputed master of Naval warfare.Disc 2 - Battleships At War The battleship reigned supreme in naval warfare from the start of this century to 1945 - and though only the Dardanelles and Jutland saw action in World War I German rearmament ensured the heavily armed queens of the seas would play a major part in the second conflict. The royal navy won early successes: the mighty Graff Spee was scuttled off south Mediterranean crushing Italy at Cape Matapan.Disc 3 - Great German Battleships of World War Two Germany's Kriegsmarine will perhaps be best known for the devastating effect her U-boats had on the Allied Naval and merchant shipping during World War Two. However her surface fleet also boasted an impressive array of military hardware with legendary names such as the Bismarck and the Tirpitz. Rare archive footage interviews with German ex-Naval officers and seaman tell the story of these floating fortresses.Disc 4 - U Boat War They were the only thing that really frightened. So said the usually steadfast Winston Churchill of the German Navy's U-boat fleet - the dreaded wolf pack which stalked the Atlantic depths bringing instant death to merchantman and warship alike. A decade of secret rebuilding had brought forth capital ships like Scharnhorst Gneisenau and Prinz Eugen - names to strike fear into any allied seafarer. But it was from under water that the biggest threat was to come. The U-Boat captains were the equivalent of Luftwaffe aces - ruthless cunning and ice-cool under pressure.Disc 5 - The Battle Of Midway A ferocious battle fought between the Japanese and United States Carrier Fleets which proved to be one of the most decisive victories and a major turning point for America in the war in the Pacific.Disc 6 - Carrier Battles Of WW2An account of all the fleet-versus-fleet actions during the conflict.

Disc One - Battleships At War:The battleship reigned supreme in naval warfare from the start of this century to 1945 and though only the Dardanelles and Jutland provided action in World War I German rearmament ensured the heavily armed queen of the seas would pay a major part in the second conflict. The Royal Navy won early successes: the mighty Graf Spee was scuttled off South America while half of Raeder's fleet was destroyed at Narvik. U-Boats and air power posed a real threat to battleship superiority as proved by British torpedo bombers at Taranto. Admiral Cunningham's fleet led by HMS Warspite ensured the Royal Navy's mastery of the Mediterranean crushing Italy at Cape Matapan. Battleships later played a leading role in North Africa Sicily Italy and the D-Day landings as floating weapons platforms pounding shore-based enemy positions. The US Navy proved all-powerful in the Pacific Leyte Gulf leaving the Japanese with only one surviving battleship. Fittingly the final act of the war took place on USS Missouri as Japan signed the surrender. The Allies had secured ultimate victory - a triumph in which the battleship had played its part.Disc Two - Great German Battleships Of World War Two:This fascinating DVD using archive footage stills and interviews with German ex-Naval officers and seamen concentrates on the exploits of the famous Bismarck. This is followed by an in-depth portrait of the mightiest and most famous German warships of World War Two including the big sea battles they encountered.Disc Three - Kriegsmarine:Adolf Hitler had promised his naval commanders that there would be no war in Europe before 1942. Accordingly plans were laid for the best naval force in the world but when Hitler precipitated the Second World War in 1939 only a fraction of the necessary ships and submarines were ready. At the outbreak of war Germany did not even possess a single aircraft carrier. The battleships Bismarck and Tirpitz fought famous actions at sea but the Kriegsmarine was always on the back foot crippled by superior opponents and strangled by bureaucratic neglect at home. This DVD features rare footage from the British and German archives of the men and ships of the Kriegsmarine in its brief heyday plus innovative maps and graphics and new footage of the last resting place of the Tirpitz. It also includes computer animation and military analysis from Dr. Simon Trew and Tim Bean of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.
