The climactic conditions for 2002 were ideal, characterized by low rainfall and drier weather with a healthier atmosphere than the previous years and few unfavourable incidents. The winter was mild overall despite quite severe frosts around the winter solstice (21.12.01). The spring was superb with only slight spring frosts causing very localised damage during the night of 15 April. July and August were warm with the occasional thunderstorm and the threat of drought was kept at bay by some welcome rainy spells. There was then little more rain for the rest of September where sunny, windy conditions prevailed. This led to a rare concentration and exceptional ripeness of grapes with a potential alcohol content of 10.28% and total acidity of 7g/l (eq. H2SO4). Harvesting started on 12 September for the earliest plots and lasted through to 28 September for the latest. The Vintage Rich 2002 is made up of 60% Pinot Noir, 7% Pinot Meunier and 33% Chardonnay. The choice of grape classification is of vital importance. The blend includes 17 crus only, which are either Grand or Premier Crus. These are located in the Montagne de Reims including Pinot Noir from Verzenay (Grand Cru) and Pinot Meunier from Ludes (Premier Cru), in the Grande Vallee de la Marne with Pinot Noir from Ay (Grand Cru) and in the Cote des Blancs where Le Mesnilsur-Oger constitutes one of the best Chardonnay (Grand Cru) vineyards. A dose of 28 g/l of sugar was added. The 2002 vintage has a pale gold colour with silver accents. It has a brilliant aspect and effervescence is lively and long-lasting. At first, freshness immediately predominates, balsamic notes of menthol and liquorice, together with hints of citrus fruits coming to the fore. As the wine is agitated, fruitier aromas, including winter cherry, mirabelle plums and grapefruit, follow, accompanied with a subtle hint of white flowers. After a few more minutes of aeration, typical 'Veuve Clicquot' notes of dried fruit (almonds, hazelnuts) and pastries (brioche, marzipan) take the lead, crowned by a veil of sweet spices like vanilla. In the mouth the wine is lively and firm, yet soft and velvety. The carefully chosen dosage provides a smooth elegant touch, with no sense of heaviness. In the mouth, the flavours confirm the wealth of notes perceived on the nose, with spicy fragrances resulting from the dosage. The finish is also contradictory, with a structure that is based both on freshness and smoothness. This elegant, well-balanced wine will delight the palate for at least the next 15 years, and, already, from a culinary point of view, its double personality is extremely interesting. Its freshness is the perfect foil for Asian cuisine (fish with fruit) while its velvety facet marries beautifully with foie gras... Whatever the choice, spicy dishes can but enhance this delightful gastronomic wine.

Very deep crimson/black in colour. A complex sweet, spicy nose showing lifted fragrant aromas of plum and blackberry with hints of sage and pepper supported by toasty oak. The intensely fruited palate exhibiting dark berries is complex and fleshy with great structure, velvety tannins and a long finish. Great vintage, drink now to 2016. Serving Idea: Pan-roasted rib-eye steak with red wine and parsnip mash. In 1912 Ronald Angas planted the sandy loam slopes of Mount Edelstone with shiraz. Located high in the Eden Valley region this vineyard came to be known as Mount Edelstone meaning gemstone. The 90-year-old ungrafted dry-grown vines from this historic single vineyard are low yielding, producing a depth of colour, concentration of flavour, length and maturity of tannins unique to old-vine shiraz. Mount Edelstone has achieved a formidable reputation since its first vintage in 1952. The 2006 vintage shaped up as another high quality year but with only average yields in the Eden Valley and Adelaide Hills. After a late break in mid-June 2005, winter and spring rains were some of the best for years in the lead-up to flowering in early summer. Some varieties, such as riesling and shiraz, suffered more than others from poor set, leading to ‘hen and chicken’. While there was some damage in Eden Valley from frost, this had only a minor impact on the overall yield; however, yields in most varieties were down by 15-20%. The summer was mild with southerly winds, reminiscent of 2002. Brief heat waves occurred in late January and mid-February but were early enough not to affect quality, with only minor sunburn on exposed fruit. Whites were nearly all picked by the end of March, an unusual situation. Summary: Excellent to Exceptional white vintage with below average yields.

The colour is beautiful dark cherry with a rich garnet rim. The nose is all deep chocolate, dark forest fruits with some spicy notes. The palate is richly opulent, beautifully structured with layered, fully integrated tannins supporting the depth of fruit. It is truly a 'Royal' wine from a great red wine vintage year. It is a limited edition classical Barossa Shiraz from low-yielding vineyards. Low yielding, mature shiraz vineyards in the Stonewell and Light Pass districts of the Barossa Valley. Fermented & macerated on skins for up to 2 weeks with some partial barrel fermentation. Following pressing and clarification, the wine was matured in French oak hogsheads for approximately 18 months. Eight Songs Shiraz sings with rare roast beef, rich casseroles, beef and game pies, and, of course, a great aged cheddar. Eight Songs Shiraz was born of our love of art and music and inspired by an operatic work, 'Eight Songs for Mad King', first performed in the Barossa in 1993. The Barossa stands amongst the great wine regions of the world. From this region, Shiraz can express diversity in flavour, style and texture. The diverse terroir of our growers' Barossa vineyards is reflected in the character of our wines. Soils, elevations and vine age vary from one vineyard to the next. The heart of Eight Songs lies in the old Shiraz vineyards spread across the landscape of the Barossa. During the vintage, we walk these vineyards, which typically yield less than 2.5 tons per acre, tasting the fruit, seeking the concentrated flavours we need for this style of Shiraz. With Eight Songs we show an elegant and distinctly softer side to Barossa Shiraz. Fermented and matured in 100% new French oak hogsheads the palate shows dark plums, choc/ mocha notes with hints of vanillin undertones. The seamless integration of opulent fruit and velvety tannins creates an elegant expression of Barossa Shiraz at its sensuous best.
