Telegraph Hill is a neighbourhood in one of the hillier sections of San Francisco that over the years has become home to a large flock of wild parrots. While no one is certain how they got there the birds were for the most part left to their own devices until discovered by Mark Bittner. A street musician and self-described Dharma bum Bittner had no practical background in ornithology when he first encountered the parrots but it wasn't long before he developed a close bond with them and took it upon himself to feed and care for the birds and even gave many of them names. Bittner's friendship with the parrots became a growing experience that taught the guitarist as much about himself as it did about the birds and with the passage of time his work earned him the respect of his community as well as a home.The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill is a superlative documentary which recounts the story of the engaging and articulate Bittner and his birds as well as an unexpected twist of fate which added a poignant note to their tale. This is the first book ever written on the subject of railway telegraph insulators in the United Kingdom....William Keith Neal, at the age of eight, decided that from the expansive canvas of industrial archaeology he would select the railway telegraph insulator as his subject. A childhood in London introduced him to the L.S.W.R. and the M.Rly. which were rich in "Langdons", and by the age of fourteen he had his own bicycle, quarter plate field camera and a folding ash tripod. Many of the 140 illustrations in this book were taken in those early years and nearly all the subjects are from his collection. The illustrations are nearly all in B/W. Binding tight. Pages clean except for a stamp on the first page reading "Telecommunications Group 71 Falcutt Way, Northampton, NN2 8PH" and the dedication from the author on the title page. The spine of the binding is bumped top and bottom. The board corners are very slightly bumped inwards.The unclipped D/W shows shelf-wear at the edges.
