Book Description : 1904, 1st Cambridge collected edition; red cloth hardback with gilded crest to front cover; 304 pages with preface and supplementary historical documents to the three works by Roger Ascham; Good. This volume presents the three most important works by Roger Ascham, a Tudor scholar and courtier, and the tutor of Elizabeth I. Although a great proclaimer and teacher of the the Greek and Latin tongues, Roger Ascham took the unconventional step of writing these works all in English, and his style of writing is very expressive. Toxophilus or "The Schole of Shoting" was the first book in English about archery and is a classic work in sporting circles. It seeks to persuade how the sport is fit for princes and great men and how it may be pleasant and advantageous both in wartime and in peace. It also describes what attributes and skills make for a good bowman. Ascham's Affaires of Germany was written during his embassy there and contains elements of German history, and Ascham's impressions of the German people and their culture. The schoolmaster is perhaps equally famous as Toxophilus. Alongside its principal theme of a method of teaching the Latin tongue, Ascham advocates and seeks to prove that the best and most effective teachers are those who proceed humanely and harness a pupil's innate readiness to learn and improve themselves. In support of this argument, Ascham gives various anecdotes, most noteably, his often mentioned meeting with Lady Jane Grey. The original 16th century spelling of words has been retained in this edition, as have the original paraphrases to each topic. Book Condition : Good : slight bumping and denting; slight shelfwear along edges of cloth, and minor small split to cloth at middle far left of spine covering; elsewhere only minor rubbing with cloth colour still quite vibrant; minor wear to gilding at spine which is still clear and bright; gilding to front cover bright and excellent; slight foxing to front face which has seeped to some far margins of pages; endpapers have minor foxing and the occasional small dab of foxing to principally the first and last handful of pages; otherwise pages free from foxing and with only minor toning; a single page has several pencil notes; binding secure and sound. You save: £1.90 Edgar Poe was born the son of itinerant actors on January 19th, 1809 in Boston, Massachusets. Abandoned by his father and the later death of his mother, he was taken into the foster care of John Allan, a Virginia tobacco farmer. Now styled as Edgar Allan Poe, he distinguished himself at the University of Virginia but was equally adept at collecting debts from his assiduous gambling. His stepfather's disapproval shattered their fragile relationship and Poe left home to seek his fortune. In 1836 he married his cousin Virginia but despite his prolific activities - journalism, poetry, lecturing, short stories, publishing, criticism and experimentation with fictional genres, including the detective novel which he virtually invented with the publication of The Murders in the Rue Morgue (1841) - he received scant recognition for his efforts until the publication of The Raven in 1845. The poem's instant popularity gave him a new visibility in literary circles, but his personal situation remained desperate: poverty, illness, drink, and the physical decline and ultimate death of Virginia in 1847 led to his untimely and premature decline.In 1849 he was found sick, injured and semi-conscious in a Baltimore tavern. Taken to hospital, he lingered on for four days, but never recovered and on October 7th Edgar Allan Poe died at the age of 40. He was one of the most original writers in the history of American letters - a genius who, thanks to his dire reputation, was tragically misunderstood during his lifetime. It was not until Baudelaire enthusiastically translated his work that he found a wider audience in Europe, and became not only an enormous influence on modern French literature but also on the acclaimed work of writers such as Dostoevsky, Conan Doyle and Jules Verne.

In all, 11 mainly British composers are represented, ranging from distinguished senior figures such as Thea Musgrave, Robert Saxton and Richard Rodney Bennett to the younger and less well-known Scot Stuart Mac Rae, the Brazilian Arthur Kampela and the Finn Jukka Tienssu. The latter provides the most challenging piece here with Oddjob--a five-minute work that creates fascinating textures by shadowing a live viola with its electronically recorded equivalent. Of the more traditional works, particularly striking is Saxton's finely imagined Invocation, Dance and Meditation, whose origins lie in ancient Jewish religious and musical traditions. Equally rewarding are the lyricism of the biggest piece, Bennett's After Ariadne, based on Monteverdi's madrigal "Lasciatemi morire", and Colin Matthews'--to use his own word--"cryptic" Oscuro. But everything is worth hearing and much of this music should appeal far beyond the boundaries of viola specialists or new-music addicts. --George Hall
